A decade ago, I worked for a large travel agency in California. We held an office birthday party for our then-colleague Ron who ran a successful cruise group business.
On his birthday toast – the then-agency owner Ricci raised a glass and wished Ron well and reminded him that before he joined us as an independent agent many years prior, he asked her - ‘Why should I join your agency?’
Ricci said she replied with: ‘..Because those that join us - become lucky.’
Everyone laughed and smiled - including Ron, because this was both funny and true. After joining us - Ron did grow his business from a small cruise outfit to one of the largest on the west coast.
Since that day - I have long pondered if Ricci’s statement was true.
Is there a greek god or muse that showers people with fairy dust to get lucky on business?
After many years of observation and hindsight, I can confidently say - Yes, many people that joined us did get lucky. But it wasn’t everyone.
Good luck and fortune came to people that showed up at work right alongside us every day, pushed forward to make progress - no matter how small, even against long odds. People like Ron.
